Mija's Cracks of Consciousness

Jun 13 - Dear Carmen,

(Confused? Check out my earlier entry, Letters to the Editor. (Click the colored words for a direct link.) Specific explanations are linked or explained via footnote. Wheeee!)

Grades are out. Looks like I'll be seeing you around campus next semester. I've always told people I'm not that easy to get rid of, now I know it's true. Phew!*

You got the recipe right. When I make these at my mother's they always come out puffy. Ours (up here) come out flat and slightly undercooked because my baking sheets are thin and have high sides, which does not let the air circulate properly. Flat sided, insulated cookie sheets let the air circulate better and keeps the bottoms of the cookies from baking at a different rate = puffier cookies, but baked all the way through without burning. If the puffiness bothers you, you can try adding more baking soda (and/or switching to 2/3 parts butter and 1/3 part shortening, but no more or the taste will suffer), or try flattening the balls before you bake. Otherwise, yeah, that recipe makes puffy little cookies. My aunt calls them cloud cookies.

I have broken down and bought a new cookie sheet, I couldn't stand the old ones any more. Devon is very excited.

We did our little play today. I made them come early so I could tell them where to stand when and how to follow the stage directions in the script. I had no idea these people were so terrified of being in front of the class. I was very supportive. In the end I just had fun and let them do their dead-pan readings. It turned out to be about as good as all the other groups - we are such a talented class.

I have to give an informative speech on Thursday - I have no idea what to talk about. I was going to do the Corporate-Super-Villain thing, but that strikes me as more of a persuasive topic. So I dunno... if all else fails I will just show them how to make cookies. That's easy enough.

Cory* is harping about me visiting him. I kind of don't want to meet his family. We are not that serious... at all. Oh, well. I am the master of excuses. I will think of something. Maybe I'll even get my ass in gear and get a freaking job - that would provide an excellent excuse (as well as some income)!

*Grades: I was VERY worried about my grades this semester - to the point that I was starting to think of ways to break my expulsion to my parents. Thankfully, it didn't come to that.

*Cory: the boyfriend
